The Helsinki Baltic Herring Market, held in the maritime environment of the Market Square, participates in the EcoCompass environmental system, which guides the event to becoming even more environmentally friendly.
Environmental work is built determinedly, step by step. The objectives are to encourage and enable visitors to act in an environmentally friendly manner, both before and during the event, to include the use of biodegradable serving dishes as one of the bidding criteria for food vendors, to pay attention to the environmental issues of subcontractors while drawing up contracts, and to communicate about the environmental work to different interest groups.
The event’s programme is also good for the environment: for example, the Silakkasoutu rowing race, a charity event for the Baltic Sea organised by Rotary clubs, will traditionally be held on the fair’s opening day. The profit from the race will be donated to the Water Protection Association of the River Vantaa and Helsinki region.
What could you do?
On the opening day of the Helsinki Baltic Herring Market, the food vendors of the event will use only biodegradable serving dishes and cutlery, so you can throw your rubbish into biowaste containers that are available near the food vendor area. The area will also have several mixed waste containers, please remember to use these to dispose of your rubbish.
It is easy to get to the Helsinki Market Square. You can use the excellent public transport connections, walk or cycle to the venue. There is a small bicycle parking area near the Suomenlinna ferry kiosk and the closest city bike station is located near the Havis Amanda plaza.
